Tennis For Britain - UX/UI Mobile App

Tennis For Britain

Overview - UX/UI Mobile App

LTA is the National Governing Body for tennis in Great Britain. Founded in 1888, Their mission is to grow tennis by making it relevant, accessible, welcoming and enjoyable.

The problem

The client want to understand why the numbers of people playing tennis was in decline and why the number os lapsed players was increase. They aimed to create a mobile app that would encourage tennis players return to courts in UK and also be able to planning their next game. I worked on the digital team leading the UX and UI design for the project.

My role: Senior Product Designer

Designed an app that allow Tennis players to planned their next game, encourage lapsed and new players to return to courts;

  • Conducted workshops with various stakeholders to understand business and users' needs.

  • Collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and others to craft customer-centric solutions that bring value to the business.

  • Ensure decisions are made with appropriate data and user insights.

  • Created a prototype to validate the research and findings.

  • Conducted user testings to validate designs and gather feedback.

  • Work on initial UI designs.

Workshop

Our first approach was to create a workshop with various stakeholders from LTA, to understand their experience, needs and their thoughts on the research findings.

Main finds found in the workshop

  • Players confidence is low and tennis can feel daunting to get back into

  • Most players switched to another sport, due to lack of people to play tennis with.

  • Players experienced difficultly in booking courts to play on within their local area.

  • Difficulty in finding the right partner to play with.

  • Lack of facilities in courts (toilets, access, lights) and lack of indoor courts

  • Lack of enthusiasm, not much encouragement around tennis

  • Difficulty in locating tennis coaches / lessons

  • Work out expensive to play tennis, for e.g booking courts, paying for lessons, equipment)

  • Some players found games too competitive, an intimidating for beginner level players.

Wireframes for User Testing prototype

Based on the findings we created a prototype to validate the research and workshop.

Prototype Features:

  • Create a profile where user can add their availability

  • Book courts online

  • Locate a coach and lessons

  • Able to create and be part of groups, events and tournaments

  • Meet other tennis players to play with, preferably at the same skill level

  • Information of witch facilities are available at the courts.

  • Feeling more like part of a community

  • Getting feedback from your recently matchs

  • Making it more accessible for everyone to play tennis, eg. split the cost of bookings

Initial UI Designs ideas

Created some initial ideas for a friendly and engaging mobile app that would allow players meeting other tennis players, planning their next game and get feedback on their performance.

Project result - User testing

We created a prototype that included potential solutions from what we found in the research and workshop. We invited a few different types of tennis players to come in and interact with the product so we could see their reactions and gain understanding of their experience. This would help us to iterate and move forward on our initial concept and to make sure we were improving the experience for players.

Take away

Users were very happy to see the options that were now available to them. They felt that it would improve their experience as they would be able to locate the right partner and court, which in turn would encourage them to continue playing.
